Lady Golfers Gear Up Ahead of the Tusker Malt Uganda Open

Uganda’s lady golfers expect to face stiff competition in the upcoming Ladies Open tournament which will be teeing off on 7th of September in this year’s Tusker Malt Uganda Open.

The 75th edition of the annual Tusker Malt Uganda Open golf tournament is scheduled for the 7th September, 2017 – 30th September, 2017 and will be taking place at the momentous Uganda Golf Club.

The lady golfers are in the advanced stages of preparations ahead of their Open tournament that is expected to have over 150 golfers from all over Africa. Some of the expected participating countries include; Tanzania, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Rwanda and Nigeria.

Uganda will be without last year’s winner, Flavia Namakula who turned pro. Uganda’s star players leading the charge will be Irene Nakalembe (H/C 5) who came in second position in last year’s tournament, Eva Magala (H/C 5) and Harriet Kitaka (H/C 7).

The ladies will be facing competition from some of the region’s finest players such as the Tanzanian team led by Angel Eaton (H/C 05), Madina Hussein (H/C 03), Hawa Wanyenche (H/C 05), Ayne Magombe (H/C 06), Vicky Elias (H/C 07).

One of Zimbabwe’s leading lady golfers, Loice Chingono (H/C 07), will also grace this year’s Tusker Malt Uganda Open.

Kenya will be well represented in the tournament with seasoned players such as; Nyakio Agnes (H/C 04) and Nyachama Mercy (H/C 04).

“We are in the advanced stages of our preparations. Staff of Uganda Golf Club have been working on the course to make it ready for the tournament. The technical teams are already in place and working on the technical aspects of the game like conditions of play. So generally I would say we are almost ready for the tournament.” Said Maxi Byenkya, the President of the Uganda Ladies Golf Union.

The Uganda Golf Union also announced new sponsors that had come onboard to boost the preparations and make contribution towards the upcoming Open. Among them is UAP Old Mutual, NTV and Capital FM.

Tusker Malt Lager injected over Shs 500 million into this year’s tournament as assurance to show its support for the development of the game golf in Uganda. There has been an increase in the cash sponsorship from Shs 230 million to Shs 250 million.

We are working alongside the Uganda Golf Union to make sure everything is going as planned. We expect the players’ kits by end of next week. We are happy with the course maintenance and the weather is helping to keep it green. As Uganda Breweries we shall continue working with the Union to grow the sport.”
