Ten Students Perish in St. Bernard’s SS Manya Fire

At least ten (10) students have been confirmed dead following a fire break out at St Bernard’s Secondary School, Manya in Kyotera – Rakai District.

The fire burnt a senior three dormitory where about 50 students resided.

The incident according to the students occurred at around midnight.

This website understands that the students were locked inside the dormitory when the fire broke out, prompting rescuers to use an axe to open the doors.

About 20 students were rescued, while many others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment in various health centres including Manya Health Centre, Kalisizo Hospital and Masaka Regional Hospital.

Property including beddings, clothes and scholastic materials were also lost in the fire.

Rakai District Police Commander Ben Nuwamanya told reporters on Monday that Police is yet to establish the cause of the fire, adding that so far, three students and the dormitory warden have been arrest to help in the investigations.
