Students at Makerere University have protested the new rules set by the university administration. This comes a week after new rules were adopted on August 25 that prohibit sexual immorality, alcoholism, gambling, use of vulgar languages and indecent dressing.
The university says this is in a bid to make the University the leading institution for academic excellence and innovation in Africa.
The gallant intellectuals blame the University council for restraining their freedom.
In an interview with the minister for academic affairs, Hon Aporou Constantine, he said “Most of these regularities are just paper work. They are Practically Impossible. And for that matter, we are going to petition them through the office of the guild president. We shall challenge these rules without fear or favor.”
This development comes three weeks after the non teaching staff were on logger heads with the same University administration. The two parties disagreed on pay increment which later hatched into a strike.
Efforts to get a comment from the Guild President have turned out futile claiming he is busy.
We’ll however endeavor to inform you of any developments.
