While the majority of Makerere University student leaders danced away at the guild dinner at the weekend, police briefly held and later threw out a group of Makerere guild Representative Councillors (GRCs) for gate-crashing.
Led by a one Jacinto Okello, who represents the school of liberal and performing arts, the GRCs had failed to raise Shs 40,000, a gate pass to the pompous guild dinner hosted at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.
Okello claimed that the money for the party had been allocated in the semester budget and thus he and his acolytes.
The GRC however denied that he was arrested.
“We were not arrested as such. We were just thrown out to avoid chaos,” an honest-sounding Okello stammered.
He also told The Tower Post that the GRC meeting had agreed on terms that they later didn’t follow and hence the confusion. According to Okello, the social affairs minister was supposed to refund Shs 25,000 to each GRC who had paid, which the minister didn’t do.
The dinner which was allocated Shs 8.5m in the budget was attended by 151 people including guild leaders, students and members of the university administration.
