Ethics and integrity minister Fr Simon Lokodo has ordered the arrest of two Makerere University students pictured dressed semi-nude at a School of Education Finalists’ dinner at Fairway Hotel in Kampala.
According to Lokodo, the dress code of these students, one of them identified as Rebecca Naddamba, “destroyed the image and integrity of the university”.
Uganda’s Anti-Pornography Act (2014) criminalises the wearing of revealing clothing, including tops that show too much cleavage and miniskirts, defined as anything above the knee.
The minister has given the two girls two options – apologize publicly or face the full wrath of the law.
Already, Naddamba has up to end of Friday to file her defence with the office of the dean of students.
Meanwhile, controversial Makerere researcher Dr Stella Nyanzi has criticised the university for gagging the students saying they are mature enough to dress the way they want.
