Makerere University has been budgeting for 16,000 more students than it actually has, according to a report from the Visitation Committee that was set up by President Museveni to investigate the university’s affairs.
In their investigation, the 9-member committee chaired by Dr Abel Rwendeire did not only meet administrators, students, teaching and non-teaching staff, but also carried out a head-count to establish correct number of students.
According to a well-placed source, the committee established the number of students at around 30,000 although the University has its official number at 46,000.
However, it should be noted that not all the students honored the committee’s head-count.
The source also revealed that about 4,000 students were found not to have identity cards, while others did not have their names appearing in the University’s official records, despite the fact that they were paying tuition to the University. This tuition money never reflected on the central account.
This website has learnt that two auditors have been hired to audit the university’s finance and administration department.
Some university staff also face dismissal as the committee is said to have established that they have been negligent while carrying out their duties.
The visitation committee is now waiting for an appointment with President Museveni to hand him their report.
