Govt Speaks Out on Presidential Age Limit Controversy

Deputy Attorney General Mwesigwa Rukutana has said he is unaware of any bill gazetted to remove the presidential age limit.

Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga on Tuesday sought clarity from the executive arm of government on the absence or presence of a bill to scrap article 102(b) of the constitution that bars anyone below 35 and above 75 years of age to contest for president.

“There is something very serious in public about the pending Bill; I have checked and it is everywhere. The Attorney General and the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs should come and clear the air,” said Kadaga

“There is nothing here [in Parliament] about the age limit but the public has been incited.”

Rukutana then responded: “Let me clearly say it here and let it be captured on record that there is no Bill being sponsored by either the government or a private member to amend article 102 (b) of the Constitution.”

“The only Bill that I am aware of that has already been passed by Cabinet is the Land Amendment Act.”
