Former presidential press secretary Joseph Tamale Mirundi claims that the newly procured cancer machine at the Uganda Cancer Institute is too old.
Mirundi spoke to Nbs TV during his Tuesday show. He claimed the machine was made in the over 70 years ago.
“I was told the machine was made in 1942,” Mirundi claimed.
He added that he feared “the machine is more dangerous that cancer itself”.
For over a year, Uganda did not have a radiotherapy machine. It was recently procured, giving hope to cancer patients.
The Tower Post could not independently verify Mirundi’s claims.
The machine was procured from UJP Praha, a multi technology company in Czech Republic, that deals in nuclear, industrial and medical equipment.
It is said to have cost €664,830 (about Shs 2.8bn) with half of the money being a contribution from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
It will be remembered that the old cancer machine, which was handling over 17000 patients each year, broke down in March 2016 and had been installed 22 years ago. It was for this reason that a new machine had to be acquired.
