Age Limit: Besigye Detained at CPS

Opposition kingpin Dr Kizza Besigye has been arrested hours after he eluded police, and sneaked out of his home in Kasangati, Wakiso district.

Minutes to 10am local time, Police started surrounding Dr Besigye’s home in Kasangati.

Police suspected Besigye would take part in age limit protests in Kampala.

Besigye was later intercepted b police at Mini Price in downtown Kampala where he was arrested.

Earlier, he had refused to get out of his car as supporters cheered him on.

Others arrested include Makerere University Guild President Paul Kato and Democratic Party vice president Mukasa Mbidde.

Besigye has been detained at the Central Police Station in Kampala.

Last week, protestors in Kampala, including students at Makerere University, demonstrated to show disdain of a motion by ruling NRM MPs led by Igara West’s Raphael Magyezi to delete the upper age limit in article 102b of the constitution that bars those above 75 years to stand for president.

When Uganda goes to the polls in 2021, Yoweri Museveni, Uganda’s three-decade president, will be over the upper age limit.

Police and military remain heavily deployed at Parliament where MPs are meeting today.
