Zimbabwe’s former president Robert Mugabe has been ben granted full immunity from prosecution and assured of safety in the country.
This according to sources was part of the deal that led to his resignation on Tuesday.
Mugabe stepped down as Zimbabwe’s President on Tuesday to allow a “smooth transition of power”. This was hours after Zimbabwe’s parliament had began impeachment process against him.
It will be remembered that Mugabe had held on to power despite the army takeover last week, until he announced his resignation on Tuesday.
The 93-year-old had been the President for 37 years ever since Zimbabwe got independence in 1980.
A government source revealed that Mugabe told negotiators he wanted to die in Zimbabwe and had no plans to live in exile.
His ‘sacked’ vice president, Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to be sworn in as interim president on Friday.
