MTN Uganda last week handed over three more Toyota Premios to winners Kiwenda, Pallisa and Oyam. This brings the total number of cars given out to six out of twenty-four. The handovers last week were tinged with several surprises and excitement by the winners.
Justus Byamukama a foreman at a farm in Kiwenda along Gayaza- Zirobwe road was the winner of the 4th MoMo Nyabo Toyota Premio. He provided one of the most surprising reaction, initially refusing to come and pick his car from the Kayunga Taxi Park, where the activation was ongoing.
“I thought there were conmen trying to fleece me so I played along. It was the insistence and phone-calls made that I realized things were real. That is when I jumped on a Bodaboda from wherever I was and picked the car. I know I caused several inconveniences to the MTN team and for that, I apologize,” Byamukama explains.
Byamukama was later driven to his home in Kiwenda and there were jubilations from the family and the community that lives around the trading center surrounding his home. He said he had been loading airtime using MTN Mobile Money regularly but had no idea there was a possibility of winning a car. An elated Byamukama said he was planning to secure a driving permit and drive his car whenever he could.
In Pallisa, it was an almost similar story as Tom Ojangole from Gogonyo in Pallisa District. Ojangole picked his car from Pallisa town, where the handover activation was taking place. Upon arrival at his home Gogonyo, celebrations welcomed him. He had traveled to Pallisa with at least 10 family members to pick the car.
“I cannot describe the feeling right now because this car has come at the right time. I have been a mason for years and owning a car has always been a dream. It has now come to pass and now I will be able to drive around as one of the few privileged people in my village,” he explained.
In Lira, Odongo Justine was silent. He didn’t look visibly excited at the Lira Mayors’ Gardens handover activation.
He looked on, shocked until he was finally handed over his car. From Lira, he was driven 70kms to his home in Ngut-chati village, Oyam District. His neighbors, family, and community then first performed traditional sprinkling of water on the car, blessing it. They later prayed for the car and started dancing.
“I used to drive a car before but that was a long time ago. Now I have my own car only after loading airtime using mobile money. This is a blessing for me and my family,” Odongo said.
