Arua Elections Will Proceed as Planned – EC Confirms

The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed that the Arua Municipality bye elections will take place on Wednesday August 15th as earlier planned despite the chaos that erupted in the area on Monday.

The announcement was made by EC chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama on Tuesday afternoon.

“Tomorrow’s election will be free and fair and we’ll respect the people of Arua. Materials will be dispatched at the earliest time,” Byabakama said.

Due to the chaos that led to the shooting of MP Bobi Wine’s driver, the public thought that the election would be extended until peace and calm return to the area.

But EC insists this has no effect on the polls and that they will take place tomorrow.

The election which is meant to replace slain former MP Ibrahim Abiriga pits 12 contestants.

The major battle according to statistics is among ruling NRM’s Nasura Tiperu, opposition FDC’s Bruce Musema, DP’s Kennedy Madira, JEEMA’s Jaffar Alekua and independent candidate Kassiano Wadri.

Wadri who was the former Terego County MP is seein as the favorite.

Other independent candidates in the race include Jackson Atima, Robert Ejiku, Francis Nyero, Sunday Anguandia, Alfred Nyakuni, Simon Avutia and Safi Bavuga.
