Friday is Not a Public Holiday – Gov’t Clarifies

Government through the Ministry of Public service has cleared the air on rumours that Friday November 30th had been declared a public holiday saying it’s not.

The talk of the Public Holiday was birthed after government indicated that Friday would be designated as a day of national mourning to honour and remember the souls of Ugandan who perished on Lake Victoria.

Over 30 people have been confirmed dead while Police continues to search for more bodies of people who died after a boat capsized on Saturday evening.

Daniel Mugulusi, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Service, in his November 28th letter to the Ministry if Information and Communication Technology (ICT) said; “Friday November 30th is a day for national mourning throughout Uganda to remember the lives of innocent Ugandans who perished in last weekend’s tragedy.”

“Flags shall fly at half-mast in tribute to the departed souls. Places of worship are encouraged to organize prayers to remember the souls of the departed,” Mugulusi said that Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda directed.

But the Prime Minister however dismissed reports that the day had been declared a public holiday.

“Please note that this day is not a public holiday,” Mugulusi wrote.

By publication time, efforts to recover the boat wreckage from the lake were still underway.
