State Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Aida Nantaba on Sunday afternoon survived assassination from armed gunmen as she travelled from Kayunga to Kampala.
Nantaba who is also the Kayunga District Woman MP was driving herself in an official vehicle along Kayunga-Mukono road when she noticed two unidentified men allegedly trailing her on a motorcycle.
The minister quickly sped off and alerted Naggalama Police Station.
Police quickly responded and shot dead one of the assailants in the operation. His colleague however managed to escape.
The two were riding on a motorcycle reg no: UDL 822A.
Nantaba was only with one bodyguard at the time of the incident. It however remains unclear why he did not open fire at the assailants that were trailing them.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango has dismissed earlier reports that the thugs had shot at the minister’s car, saying it was not true.
“The car was not shot at,” Onyango said.
The incident comes after several prominent Ugandans including former Police Spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi, ASP Muhammad Kirumira, State Prosecutor Joan Kagezi and MP Abiriga Ibrahim among others have been assassinated buy armed men riding on motorcycles.
