Marc Batchelor Dead: Ex-South African Footballer Shot Dead in Johannesburg

Former South African footballer Marc Batchelor has been shot dead in Johannesburg.

Batchelor achieved the rare feat of having played for both giants of South African football Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates as well as the national team.

He was driving in his vehicle on Monday night when he was shot several times, police confirmed.

Police spokesman Lungelo Dlamini revealed the incident took place at around 6pm on Monday evening.

“Yes, he was shot this evening by two men on a motorbike,” Dlamini told Soccer Laduma.

“He died in his vehicle and nothing was taken. The motive is yet to be established, but we are investigating.”

Dlamini added to News24: “He was shot through the window several times and died at the scene.

“A case of murder is being investigated by the police and the motive behind the attack is still unknown.”

No arrests have yet been made, it has been reported.

Batchelor, a colourful character in South African football, was a witness in the Oscar Pistorius murder trial.

He testified about the former Paralympian’s temper, according to IOL.

Pistorius had reportedly had a run-in with a friend of Batchelor’s, who the athlete had suspected of being romantically linked with Reeva Steenkamp.
