The National Resistance Movement (NRM) secretary-general Justine Kasule Lumumba has asked the Interparty Organization for Dialogue (IPOD) to aggressively think about having the 2021 general elections conducted in a scientific manner due to coronavirus.
“Scientists can advise us accordingly. If the numbers are many, can’t we have a scientific election like the way scientific marriage and scientific burials are done?” Lumumba said.
However, the Executive director of IPOD Frank Rusa says that although the use of technology is desirable, it is not equitable in Uganda’s context.
“If the electoral commission is talking about the use of technology in this period, how inclusive is it going to be? How transparent is it going to be? What is going to be role political parties and civil society in the use of technology?,” Rusa wonders.
A couple of weeks ago, President Museveni told Ugandans while on an interview with a local television that it would be madness to have elections during the coronavirus pandemic.
“If the virus can stop around June, then we can have elections. we don’t have to have a long period of campaigns, Elections are not a big issue, we can organize quickly” Museveni said.
The Electoral Commission boss, Simon Byabakama said recently that there were no plans to cancel the 2021 elections.
