MPs Arrested for Staging Protest Against Rising Covid-19 Cases

Two Members of Parliament and several other people have been arrested in Gulu for staging a protest against the rising numbers of Covid-19 in Uganda. The MPs are; Gilbert Okanya (Kilak County), Samuel Odonga Otto (Arru County). Others arrested include LC3 chairman Kelly Komakech and four other activists.

The protestors hit the streets in Gulu town to demand for the closure of Elegu border town.

A number of cases have been detected at the border town, many of whom are truck drivers.

The MPs were arrested on Monday on orders of Gulu District police commander Mr Emmanuel Mafundo.

According to Patrick Jimmy Okema, the police spokesman for Aswa river region the politicians were arrested because they did not seek permission from the police.

“Two of the legislators and several others are in our custody at Gulu central police station. Investigations are ongoing while we trace other protestors who are on the run because their activities were illegal,” Mr Okema said.

Uganda’s cases of coronavirus currently stand at 457. 72 patients have since recovered from the disease.

President Museveni will today address the nation on the measures being taken to flatten the curve.
