Gov’t May Reconsider Re-imposing Strict Lockdown Measures – Minister Nabakooba

The minister of information and technology, Judith Nabakooba has revealed that Uganda could be put back to the virus-induced lockdown if Ugandans don’t adhere to the precautionary measures issued by the government.

“I want to warn members of the public that unless we change and fully adapt to the existing guidelines on Covid-19 prevention, the government may reconsider re-imposing strict lockdown measures in order to prevent the country from slipping into a bigger outbreak,” Nabakooba said.

This, however, according to the Kampala capital city Authority Lord mayor, Erias Lukwago is merely a political gimmick by the government to have the forthcoming 2021 Elections held scientifically.

“There are already manoeuvres being made by the regime to have a sham election and they are looking for justifications to curtail people’s liberties, movements and organise a scientific election. So, all they are looking to is, having a justification for that scientific electoral exercise,” Lukwago said.

Relatedly, security forces have also been mounting operations to apprehend persons that are compromising the Covid-19 measures such as wearing masks and social distancing in public.

Lukwago says that the government’s failure to distribute face masks in time explains the conduct.

“How many Ugandans have got masks? Have they refused to put on the masks? We’re they given out by government and Ugandans rejected them? So, Who is at fault? Before you blame Ugandans for not complying with the standard operating procedures, you ask yourself, have you honoured your obligation as the state?” Lukwago wondered.

Minister Nabakooba’s revelation comes just a few days when the minister of health, Jane Ruth Acheng also cautioned Ugandans to brace themselves for the second phase of lockdown if they aren’t complying with the guidelines set by the government.
