At least four people have been shot dead and several injured in Ganda village, Nansana Municipality after a Uganda People’s Defence Force – UPDF officer opened fire on Monday morning.
The officer who has been identified as Lance Corporal Omara Denis Awilo, according to eye witnesses went on a rampage and started shooting indiscriminately at the masses around him.
Among his four victims are two officers of the Local Defence Unit – LDU, a Police officer and a civilian who was driving by.
In turn, the UPDF officer was also gunned down by security personnel.
Through their Deputy spokesperson Lt. Col. Deo Akiiki, the UPDF has condemned the action taken by the late Omara and pledged to investigate until they ascertain the root cause.
“We condemn the outrageous acts of the lower commander against his surbidinates. We extend our sincere condolences to those whose lives have been taken and grieve with the families,” Akiiki wrote in a statement released on Monday morning.
“Joint investigations have commenced to ascertain what prompted the Junior noncommissioned officer to shoot at his colleagues.”
