Erias Lukwago Wins Kampala Mayor Race Amid Rigging Claims

Incumbent Kampala Lord Mayor Ssalongo Erias Lukwago has won the Kampala Mayoral race, extending his reign over the capital city to his third term.

Lukwago beat competition from eleven other contestants including singer Joseph Mayamja alias Jose Chameleone who contested as an independent candidate, former Kampala Woman MP Nabilah Ssempala Naggayi from the National Unity Platform – NUP, Daniel Kazibwe alias Ragga Dee of the ruling National Resistance Movement – NRM among others.

“What a historic moment! Praise be to the Almighty. Thank you Kampala! The Statement is unequivocally loud and clear; OMULOODI WAALI. Our love is etched in stone. Asante sana. Mungu awabarik,” Lukwago said on Wednesday night.

Despite Lukwago’s victory, NUP’s Nabilah and Independent Joseph Mayanja claimed the election was marred with irregularities, accusing Lukwago of rigging.

Nabilah further blamed Kampala leaders for colluding to fail her and the NUP.

“There is a specific target towards National Unity Platform to fail my ambitions. I look at the confidence Lukwago’s camp has around the police,” she added.

“There is malpractice already. I have just heard at Christ the King civic centre the army has cordoned off the area, we are not saying that it is free and fair, we will assess the day’s election as it unfolds and ends,” she said.
