FULL LIST: 21 Seek to Represent UPDF in Parliament

A total of 21 people are facing off with each other in a race to represent the Uganda People’s Defence Force – UPDF in parliament.

The Army was gazette as a Special Interest group which needed representation in parliament alongside youths, workers and persons with disabilities.

This has however been challenged by opposition legislators who think the UPDF shouldn’t be represented.

In his Constitutional (Amendment) Bill, 2019, the Shadow Attorney General Wilfred Niwagaba proposed the removal of army representatives from parliament but this didn’t see light of day as the proposal was rejected.

The committee in its justification of the rejection said that the proposal to remove army representatives from parliament may be challenged for infringing the procedure prescribed in Article 78(2) of the Constitution.

The committee further noted that the existence of army representatives in Parliament as a special interest group was not an afterthought but a conscious decision taken by the people of Uganda, based on the country’s past history and the participation of the army in the political and social upheavals that characterized post-independence politics of the country.

In the elections which are being conducted today, 17 army officers are in the race to represent men while only four are vying to represent female officers..
