Showing up for an interview at Hima Cement Offices in a grader, Paddy Kitandwe’s tenacity has left Ugandans on the internet mesmerized. And that’s not even the whole story.
The COVID19 pandemic has had adverse effects on the globe in more ways than one. Unfortunately, Uganda has been spared from those effects.
Working class people all over the world transitioned to working from their homes after lockdowns were announced in a bid to reduce the spread of the virus. When lockdowns were lifted, most companies had to downsize on their staff if they were to stay afloat. Like many, Paddy was unlucky and ended up a victim of those circumstances. His search for a new job had since been fruitless. He got turned down wherever he applied.
Meanwhile at home, pressure was mounting. As the breadwinner, his family expected him to provide for their basic needs regardless of him not having a job. As luck would have it, he found work at a construction site. There was a glimmer of hope.
The call from Human Resources at Hima Cement came on a casual day for Paddy. He was ferrying bricks like he normally did. The HR office said his application had been successful and invited him for an interview. In the thrill of excitement, Paddy wanted to rush home to change into his “Sunday-best” but he reconsidered and instead had his boda guy fetch him the suit he is seen donning in the video.
His colleagues at the site rejoiced with him and let him take the day off so he could maximize his shot at getting the job. As if that wasn’t enough, they even let him use the grader for transport.
Anyone who travels in this Kampala knows how hectic it is to navigate its traffic so it’s a mystery how Paddy even made it to Hima Cement offices in a grader. It’s a mystery we hope to unravel someday soon.
In an attempt to alight the grader, an overjoyed Paddy lost his balance and toppled before gathering himself and his papers that were strewn on the road.
Whether he gets the job or not we shall update you.
