Another Suspected Gay Resident Forced to Flee Home After Community Pressure

A suspected gay resident has allegedly been forced out of his home following pressure from local leaders and members of the community, The Tower Post has learnt.

Migabo Hassan, who was residing in Kisaasi Village, Bulyantete Ward, Kawolo Division in Lugazi Municipality, Buikwe District, received a formal notice from the local council instructing him to leave the area with immediate effect.

The notice, dated February 19, 2022, issued by Kisaasi Local Council 1, cited growing concerns among residents regarding his sexual orientation, which reportedly led to tension within the community.

According to the letter, Hassan’s presence in the village was considered a risk to his own safety due to increasing hostility from locals.

“You are advised to vacate the village with immediate effect to avoid further conflict and danger,” part of the communication from the LC1 Chairperson stated.

Local sources say that the situation escalated after community members raised complaints and demanded action from leaders, fearing unrest if no measures were taken.

It is reported that Migabo left the area shortly after receiving the notice, although his current whereabouts remain unclear.

This incident highlights the persistent challenges faced by individuals perceived to be part of the LGBTQ+ community in Uganda, where stigma and discrimination remain widespread.

Human rights observers have criticized such actions, noting that forced displacement and community-driven expulsions undermine basic rights and personal freedoms.
