Justice Simon Byabakama will be in charge of the 2026 general elections following his reappointment into the seat of the Electoral Commission Chairperson.
Byabakama’s reappointment was revealed in President Museveni’s letter dated January 5th to Speaker Anita Among, the letter which The Tower Post has received a copy of.
“In exercise of the powers vested in the President by Article 60 (1) of the 1995 constitution, I have appointed persons below as Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson and members of the electoral commission respectively,” the letter reads in part.
Hajjati Aisha Lubega retains her position as deputy chairperson while Stephen Tashobya also bounces back as a member of the commission.
Makerere’s Political Science and Public Administration Dr. Salie Simba Kayunga, former Kyoga County MP Anthony Okello, the commission’s Acting Head of Administration Pamela Etonu Okudi and former Nansana MP Robert Kasule Sebunya are the new appointees.
The appointees will be vetted by the Parliament Appointments Committee chaired by Speaker Among before taking office.
Peter Emorut, Nathaline Etomaru and Hajj Mustapha Ssebagala were dropped following the end of their 7-year term on January 7th 2024.
