SC Villa’s hopes of winning the Uganda Premier League have been kept alive after a thrilling 2:1 win against Western Uganda side Mbarara City FC. Lutalo’s 20th minute goal from a free kick and Kiwanuka’s 69th minute strike made sure the record champions stay in the run.
The match that was hosted at SC Villa’s home, Muteesa II Stadium, Wankukukuku started with both teams showing determination, with an equal share of possession in the early stages.
SC Villa initiated the attack, showcasing good team interplay, but Kakande’s attempt in the 2nd minute was off target. As the game progressed, opportunities arose for both sides, with Lwanga missing a chance to connect with Sekiganda’s cross in the 13th minute.
In the 20th minute, Semugera was fouled by Mbarara’s Odong near the box, leading to a free kick for SC Villa, which was expertly converted by Lutalo, giving the Jogoos the lead.
However, Mbarara City FC quickly responded, with Kitegenyi equalizing in the 30th minute after Wokorach failed to handle a cross properly.
The first half ended with the score leveled, setting the stage for an intense second half. SC Villa came out strong after the break, with Kakande missing a shot in the 53rd minute. Managerial changes were made by the gaffer with Kiwanuka and Kyeyune coming in for Owori and Sekiganda.
In the 69th minute, Kiwanuka found the back of the net, putting SC Villa ahead once again thanks to Kafumbe’s timely cross. The Jogoos continued to press forward, displaying excellent teamwork as they searched for a third goal. Substitutions were made by SC Villa, with Mpande and Ngonde coming on the Fray.
As the match entered its final minutes, SC Villa maintained their lead, securing all three points.
