Walukuba Barbarians are the champions of the 2024 Guinness-sponsored Kigezi High Altitude Rugby 7s at Kabale Stadium.
They beat Jinja Hippos 22-12 in an Eastern Uganda derby as Saturday’s final lived to the expectations.
The Barbarians had eliminated KOBs and Buffaloes in the Semi and Quarterfinals respectively.
“This victory is a testament to our hard work and dedication,” said Bob Kawanda, captain of the Walukuba Barbarians.
“We came here to play our best rugby, and we executed our game plan perfectly.”
Featuring 12 men’s teams and four women’s teams, the event underscored the sport’s growing popularity and competitive nature in the region.
Roy Tumwizere, Guinness Brand Manager, emphasized the brand’s commitment to rugby, stating, “Rugby and Guinness embody strength, passion, and community. Supporting events like the Kigezi High Altitude Rugby 7s allows us to celebrate these values and aid rugby’s development from the grassroots level. This edition’s inclusion of female teams from Rwanda highlighted the event’s expanding reach and inclusivity.
The Thunderbirds claimed victory in the women’s category, with Angayika Comfort named top scorer and MVP.
The defending champions, Lifeguard Rams, finished third but boasted the tournament’s top scorer, Opilleni Hossana, and MVP, Edrine Obbo.
Teams like the Kobs, Rhinos, Warriors, Rams, Jinja Hippos, Kigezi Silverbacks, Tooro Lions, Naguru Home Boys, Kigezi Queens, Jaguars, and Lady Swans ensured a day filled with excitement.
Rwanda was represented by the Lions De Fer, 1000 Hills, Rwamagana Hippos (Women), and Kamonyi Panthers (Women).
