The Executive Director for the Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA) Ter Manyang Gatwech on Thursday urged citizens to cooperate with security officers, manning checkpoints at night following the recent shooting at two motorists by soldiers in Juba.
“CPA encourages citizens to comply with the rules and regulations set by soldiers on duty at night,” Gatwech said in a statement issued in Juba.
On July 23, 2024, soldiers on duty stationed near Dr. John Garang Mausoleum and along Kololo road opened fire on two vehicles after the occupants refused directives by the soldiers to be searched.
Gatwech accused the soldiers manning checkpoints on the fateful night of using excessive force against the affected civilians.
He said that CPA is closely monitoring the situation after learning of ill-disciplined conduct of some rogue national security services officers on duty.
“It is essential for citizens to be able to enjoy and freely go to nightclubs as this is a healthy activity in any country. Furthermore, CPA calls on the soldiers on duty at night to respect the citizens and adopt a more positive approach towards the general population,” said Gatwech.
