South Sudan: Two Communities Call for Special Court to Resolve Conflict

The Jonglei State minister of information and communication, Nyamar Lony Thichot Ngundeng on Saturday said they are working on establishing a special court to deal with grievances of the rival communities of Ayual in Twic East County and Hol of Duk County.

“Both communities accepted legal procedures including arrest, investigations and trials to be effected as soon as possible to prevent further escalation. Both communities also agreed on the formation of a special court to try the case,” said Ngundeng in a statement.

Ngundeng revealed that the conflict between Ayual and Hol communities over fishing nets caused the death of 19 people since September 2023.

“The process of solving the problem shall be completed within three months in phases. Two commissioners and two paramount chiefs are to bring the culprits from both sides to the State authorities,” she disclosed.

Ngundeng said the two warring communities appreciated Mahjuob Biel Turuk, the Governor of Jonglei State and his deputy Atong Kuol Manyang for the dialogue, adding that Jacob Chol Tor, Commissioner of Twic East County and John Chatim, the Commissioner of Duk County have been tasked to disseminate the agreement reached between the two communities.

She noted that the two communities have agreed on ending the conflict.

In September 2023, clashes between the two rival communities in Lang area left three people killed including a prominent wrestler.

In June 2024, the fighting in the same area left 7 people dead and scores wounded with the latest deadly incidence happening this month, July 19, 2024 in Biothagany area leading to the death of 9 people.
