Scores Feared Dead as Heap of Garbage Buries Houses, Livestock at Kiteezi Landfill

Scores of people are feared dead following a Saturday morning tragedy that hit the Kampala Capital City Authority – KCCA Landfill in Kiteezi where a heap of garbage buried houses, people and livestock.

The landfill which processes about 1,500 tons of waste daily lost its structural integrity following heavy rains on Friday night leading to partial collapse.

KCCA together with local authorities have already swung into action to rescue the buried people and livestock.

Although no fatalities have been reported so far, scores are still missing and feared dead.

“The level of damage is still being assessed. However, no fatalities have been recorded at this time. Our teams, along with other government agencies are on ground taking the necessary measures to ensure the area is secure and to prevent any further incidents,” KCCA said in a statement on Saturday afternoon.

“We are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the community,” the Authority added.
