Roads body, UNRA has closed Mabira off heavy trucks to allow for ongoing repairs on this part of the Kampala – Jinja highway.
According to UNRA heavy trucks will no longer be allowed to use the road effective today but will be diverted at Wantoni to use the Mukono-Kyetume-Katosi-Kisoga- Nyega/ Njeru road.
“This move is aimed at accelerating ongoing works at the Mabira section along the Kampala-Jinja highway. We are working with traffic police to ensure adherence to the traffic flow changes and facilitate smooth execution of works,” UNRA said in a statement.
UNRA says that whereas buses are allowed to use this section, heavy trucks will not be permitted since they cause a gridlock given their slow movement yet half the road is closed.
“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we work to improve the road user experience at Mabira.”
Police guide
According to traffic police, officers will be present along with a team from the Uganda National Roads Authority to guide motorists to ensure smooth traffic movement.
“We appeal to all motorists to adhere to traffic officers’ directives, exercise utmost discipline and patience during the road works,” traffic police spokesperson, Michael Kananura said.
The development comes on the backdrop of several complaints by motorists who were using the Kampala-Jinja highway over the Mabira section of the highway which had ben eaten up by potholes which not only caused traffic jam but also accidents.
