In a powerful stride towards economic empowerment, Elevate Her Uganda launched its ambitious Backyard Poultry Project, aiming to transform the lives of 60,000 women across Western Uganda, with 20,000 specifically in Mitoma District. The initiative, spearheaded by founder Loice Natukunda Otafiire, is providing women with the tools and resources to establish sustainable poultry farming businesses, tackling the critical issue of financial independence in a region where women face significant societal challenges.
The project, which began distributing chicks in June 2024, is designed to uplift women-led families, teenage mothers, and women living with HIV/AIDS, offering them a pathway to self-sufficiency and improved livelihoods.
“Let’s all take good care of these chicks given to us so that our families can benefit and improve on the economic independence in society,” urged Loice Natukunda Otafiire, Executive Director of Elevate Her Uganda, as she addressed hundreds of women in Mitoma District. Her words resonated with the palpable hope and determination in the air, marking the beginning of a transformative journey for many.

The Backyard Poultry Project is a holistic approach to women’s empowerment, addressing not only economic needs but also fostering resilience and self-reliance. By providing the initial resources and support, Elevate Her Uganda is enabling women to build sustainable businesses that can generate income, provide for their families, and contribute to their communities.
“The backyard poultry project will not only build strong resilient women but will also empower women financially so as to be able to provide for their livelihood,” explained Osillo Daniel, Programs Manager. As Elevate Her Uganda, we call upon other development partners to join this noble cause of empowering women and transforming communities through programs like the backyard poultry program.”
