Court Annuls Nalukoola’s Victory in Kawempe North By-Elections

The High Court in Kampala has nullified Elias Nalukoola Luyimbazi’s election as Kawempe North Member of Parlliament, The Tower Post has learnt.

The court’s decision followed a petition by ruling National Resistance Movement – NRM’s Faridah Nambi Kigongo citing voter bribery and campaigning on the day of elections.

Nambi, through her lawyers led by Ahmed Kalule, also listed disenfranchisement of voters at 14 polling stations whose results were never counted during the computation of results and obstructing her voters from voting at the election contrary to section 90 of the Parliamentary Elections Act, Cap 177.

The High Court Civil Division in it’s ruling has ordered a fresh by-election and declared the seat vacant, a decision that has been met by rejection and criticism from key figures in the opposition.

“A day of infamy! So judge Bernard Namanya has nullified the election of comrade Hon. Nalukoola Erias Luyimbazi claiming that he campaigned on election day and that elections were disrupted at 14 polling stations Meaning that henceforth, the regime can deploy goons to disrupt elections in areas where they know they can’t rig or win,” Lewis David Rubongoya, the Secretary General of opposition National Unity Platform wrote on his X(formerly Twitter) page.

“Hopefully the Court of Appeal will overturn this absurd decision!” he added.
