Two Killed in Explosion Near Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine

At least two unidentified people have been killed in a suspected bomb explosion near Munyonyo Martyrs Shrine.

According to preliminary reports, the pair was traveling on a boda boda, suspected to be en route to the Munyonyo Martyrs site, when the explosion went off, killing them on the spot and completely destroying the motorcycle.

Security agencies, including the Joint Anti-Terrorism Taskforce (JATT), the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit, and Uganda Police, quickly responded to the incident, cordoning off the scene as investigations got underway.

Authorities have not yet identified the deceased individuals. Forensic teams are currently working to ascertain their identities and possible affiliations.

The incident has raised concerns over security in the area, particularly as Uganda prepares to commemorate Martyrs Day a major religious event that draws thousands of pilgrims to Munyonyo and Namugongo.

Pilgrims who had not reached the Basilica have been stopped from moved towards the site.
