Kampala Woman Member of Parliament, Shamim Malende, is set to return to Uganda on Monday next week after spending several months in Nairobi receiving medical treatment.
Malende made the announcement on her official X platform, where she confirmed the date of her return.
“I am coming back home, Monday July, 21 .Thank you my people,” she announced.
The legislator, who traveled to Nairobi in April for specialized care, is expected to contest for her parliamentary seat in next year’s election despite ongoing health challenges.
Her determination to stay in the race was made clear when her supporters picked and returned her nomination forms at the party headquarters, signaling her continued interest in representing Kampala if endorsed by her party for a second term.
Prior to being flown to Nairobi, Malende, 38, had been receiving treatment at Nsambya Hospital.
Her condition stems from injuries sustained during a violent episode in November 2024, when unidentified security forces raided Parliament during the controversial passing of the Coffee Bill. She was reportedly beaten during the chaos.
Malende’s health struggles have since opened up the race for the Kampala Woman MP seat, with several women expressing interest in the position.
Among them are Zahra Naluyirika, the current KCCA Speaker; Winifred Nakandi; Mariam Obeid Lutale, daughter of Dr. Kizza Besigye’s aide Obeid Lutale; and Namuli Joweria Zaake, among others.
