Mwenge South Storms into Semis as Tooro Kingdom MTN Masaza Cup Enters Final Stretch

Mwenge South booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2025 MTN Kabode Tooro Kingdom Masaza Cup with a dominant 3-0 victory over Mwenge North at a packed Katooke Playground on Sunday afternoon.

Coming into the final group stage clash with just one point, Mwenge South needed nothing less than a win to progress from Group C, and they delivered in style. Midfielder Joseph Kayondo opened the scoring with a clinical first-half free kick, before second-half goals from Abel Kavuma and Ismael Rwamitara sealed the emphatic result.

Kavuma doubled the lead in the 80th minute with a well-timed header, while Rwamitara put the result beyond doubt with a late strike in the 90th minute.

Speaking after the match, Kavuma expressed pride in his side’s performance:

“We played a very good game right from the start and created chances which we utilized to secure our victory, though the home side was also strong.”

Mwenge North, who led the group with three points and needed only a draw to qualify, were left stunned. Francis Mwesige, an official from Mwenge North, acknowledged the effort of the team and support they received:

“We thank our fans, the kingdom and MTN our sponsors for this great Amasaza Cup. The journey to this level wasn’t easy. We played a good game but the best team won—let’s wait for next year.”

Fred Mugisa, an official from Mwenge South, also lauded the fans for their support and discipline:

“I am very happy with the fans. They came in big numbers and their discipline was very good. Everywhere we have gone, fans have been good. We also appreciate the sponsors MTN and our kingdom.”

Semi-Finals Locked In

With the final group game concluded, the semi-final lineup for the fourth edition of the tournament is now confirmed. Nine counties began the journey on August 8th, split into three groups, but only four remain.

  • Group A: Fort Portal qualified as group leaders with four points.
  • Group A: Kyaka advanced as the best loser, also with four points.
  • Group B: Defending champions Burahya topped the group with six points.
  • Group C: Mwenge South secured their spot with four points after Sunday’s win.

The semi-finals will be played over two legs starting Sunday, August 10th. Fort Portal will host Burahya in the opening leg—a rematch of the 2024 final, where Burahya edged Fort Portal 4-3 in a penalty shootout.

In the second semi-final, 2022 champions Kyaka will face 2023 winners Mwenge South. The two sides last met in the 2023 final, where Mwenge South triumphed 2-1 to lift the trophy.

Sunday’s clash was also a rematch of their 2023 semi-final showdown, when Mwenge South defeated Mwenge North 2-0 in the second leg at Katoosa Playground after a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the same Katooke venue.
