Former Makerere University Business School (MUBS) principal, Prof. Waswa Balunywa, has been remanded to Luzira Prison following his court appearance on charges of abuse of office.
Prosecution alleges that Prof. Balunywa allegedly abused his position during his tenure at MUBS between February and April 2023 by irregularly recruiting three individuals as administrative assistants, despite their lack of the required academic qualifications.
The appointments are reported to have incurred ineligible costs to the government, forming the basis of the ongoing corruption case.
In addition to these allegations, Prof. Balunywa faces fresh charges over the illegal recruitment of 103 academic staff, 17 administrative staff, and 69 support staff.
Prosecutors claim that these appointments bypassed the legally designated appointing committee, violating established recruitment procedures.
The court has remanded Prof. Balunywa until September 5, pending further hearings.
