UPDF Refutes Killings in Komanda–Eringeti, Clarifies Operation Shujaa Incident

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has dismissed reports alleging that its troops carried out killings in Komanda–Eringeti, Democratic Republic of Congo, where they are jointly battling Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels alongside the Congolese army under Operation Shujaa.

In a statement dated September 4, the army clarified that no such killings took place in Komanda–Eringeti as claimed. Instead, the UPDF reported that a clash occurred in Apakwanga, about 40 kilometers north of Komanda in Mambasa territory, during which two Ugandan soldiers were killed in action. The area was once a stronghold of ADF leader Musa Baluku, but joint forces successfully dislodged the rebels from it.

The army explained that the ADF, facing sustained pressure from UPDF and FARDC operations, has shifted tactics to carrying out reprisal attacks in isolated and hard-to-reach villages. According to the statement, the rebels aim to intimidate civilians and generate propaganda to maintain relevance.

The UPDF further revealed that ongoing operations in Chabi saw joint forces launch an assault on two ADF groups of 10–15 fighters each. The operation resulted in the death of three rebels and the recovery of three firearms. Pursuit operations are continuing to track another splinter group of 15–20 fighters operating around Oicha.

Reaffirming its stance, the UPDF said it remains committed, together with FARDC, to protecting civilians, dismantling terrorist networks, and ensuring lasting peace and stability in eastern DRC.
