Seven Injured in NUP Convoy Accident, Police Issues Warning

At least seven people were injured on Monday, September 29, when a road traffic accident occurred along the Kalagi–Kayunga Road near Namyoya Village involving motorcycles and vehicles escorting National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate, Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu.

According to police, the incident began when a motorcycle in the convoy, reportedly traveling at high speed, collided with a vehicle from behind. The impact triggered a chain reaction, causing several other motorcycles to crash. A white Mitsubishi vehicle bearing the candidate’s images, registration number UAZ 064H, was also involved in the collision.

Victims were rushed to St. Francis Naggalama Hospital for treatment, with some later referred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for specialized care. Others with minor injuries reportedly left the scene with their motorcycles.

Police identified the injured as Kewanza Bashir (27), Kakaire Bashir (35), Ssepereza Musa (40), Kisomba Michael (28), Ssewaya Eric (23), and Mutagubya Robert (24).

  • Kewanza Bashir sustained multiple injuries including a maxillary fracture.
  • Kakaire Bashir suffered multiple wounds and injuries.
  • Ssepereza Musa sustained multiple injuries and a fracture to the right leg.
  • Mutagubya Robert suffered multiple injuries, wounds, and a fracture.
The three were transferred to Mulago for specialized treatment.

Meanwhile, Kisomba Michael and Ssewaya Eric remain admitted at St. Francis Hospital, with Kisomba suffering a right leg fracture and chest pain.

The vehicles involved — the Mitsubishi UAZ 064H and several motorcycles with registration numbers including UFQ 569H, UGH 892B, UEK 351T, and UFQ 250Q — have been towed to Naggalama Police Station for further inspection.

Police preliminary investigations point to reckless riding and driving as the cause of the accident. Officers also noted reports that campaign boards displaying Kyagulanyi’s photos had been placed in the middle of the road, potentially obstructing traffic.

In a statement, police warned all political actors and their entourages to strictly observe traffic laws.

“Irresponsible use of the roads, as demonstrated in this incident that caused multiple injuries, will not be tolerated. The Police will enforce strict measures to prevent such conduct and ensure adherence to the law,” the statement read.

Authorities urged campaign teams and supporters to comply fully with traffic regulations to avoid similar incidents in the future.
