Janet Museveni to Meet FUFA, Vipers Officials Over Uganda Premier League Format Dispute

Education and Sports Minister Janet Kataaha Museveni is set to meet Vipers Sports Club President Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa and FUFA President Moses Magogo to address growing tensions over the controversial new Uganda Premier League (UPL) format.

The meeting, expected to take place this week, follows a formal petition submitted by Vipers SC to the Ministry of Education and Sports, seeking government intervention in what the club has described as an unfair and disorganized competition structure.

Sources at the ministry confirmed that State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang is also expected to attend, alongside FUFA officials, as the government moves to mediate the dispute between the league organizers and one of Uganda’s most successful football clubs.

Vipers SC recently boycotted a league fixture, refusing to honor their scheduled match under the new format, which introduces double-header fixtures and revised scheduling. The club argues that the format was imposed without proper consultation and undermines the integrity of the league.

In a letter dated October 2, Dr. Mulindwa accused FUFA and the UPL Secretariat of ignoring club concerns and acting unilaterally in making structural changes to the competition. The boycott marked a rare act of defiance in Ugandan football, prompting widespread debate among fans, pundits, and sports administrators.

The Ministry hopes the upcoming dialogue will restore harmony and ensure the smooth running of the league, which has faced disruptions since the format was introduced at the start of the season.

Both FUFA and Vipers SC have remained tight-lipped on the expected outcome of the meeting, but sources suggest the discussions could lead to a review or suspension of the current league structure pending wider consultations with clubs.
