South Sudan: Cargo Plane Delivering Aid Crashes in Leer County

A chartered cargo aircraft transporting humanitarian aid has crashed in Leer County, Unity State, with authorities reporting that all three occupants are presumed dead.

The plane went down on Tuesday morning at around 8:00 a.m. near Rupchier Boma in Guat Payam.

According to acting county commissioner Kueth Latjor, the small aircraft was delivering food supplies for the relief organization Samaritan’s Purse. It had departed from Juba and was en route to Leer to support communities affected by flooding.

Latjor, who also serves as the county’s executive director, said the two crew members and an onboard engineer are believed to have died instantly.

The crash site is in a remote location, roughly a three-hour walk from the nearest access point.

“I have dispatched security personnel, including the payam administrator, to the scene,” Latjor stated. “We expect a detailed report once they return.”

The cause of the accident remains unknown.
