The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, on Monday toured the UPDF Entebbe Air Base to assess a demonstrator of the Aero L-39 SKYFOX aircraft showcased by its manufacturer.
A team from Aero Vodochody — led by Mr. Vladan Resner and including Mr. David Jahoda and Mr. Vladimir Tovarek — briefed the CDF on the aircraft’s advanced capabilities, outlining the features of the turbofan-powered trainer and light-attack platform.
The Commander of the Air Force, Lt. Gen. Charles Okidi, together with other senior Air Force officials, attended the inspection session.
Gen. Kainerugaba emphasized the need for the Air Force to keep pace with evolving technology, stressing that modernizing Uganda’s air capability remains a central defence priority. He has previously pointed out that the Air Force grew from humble beginnings during the NRA era, which initially lacked an air component.
His broader modernization agenda for the UPDF includes upgrading equipment, enhancing professional training, and implementing institutional reforms designed to improve efficiency and welfare. Reviewing advanced platforms like the L-39NG is part of this effort to strengthen the force’s operational readiness.
Should the aircraft be procured, it is expected to significantly boost pilot training and provide added support for light combat missions.
