South Sudan: Kiir Fires Finance Undersecretary

On Monday evening, South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit dismissed the First Undersecretary of Finance in the Ministry of Finance and Planning.

The decision, announced via the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation, removed Garang Majak Bol from the post and reinstated Kuol Daniel Ayulo, who had previously held the same position.

No explanation was provided for the reshuffle.

Commenting on the move, Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), emphasized that appointments in the Ministry of Finance and Planning should be guided by performance and merit.

He warned that frequent personnel changes risk turning the ministry into a hub of corruption and misconduct. “Transparency and accountability become harder to achieve if this pattern of regular reshuffles continues,” Yakani said. He also noted that corrupt officials are rarely held publicly accountable under the current system.
