Michael Othow Bol, the commissioner of Makal County in South Sudan’s Upper Nile State, has died in Juba after a prolonged illness. He was 62.
His press secretary, Angelina Sabit, confirmed that he passed away on Sunday at Juba Teaching Hospital, explaining that he suffered a sharp drop in blood sugar levels before his death.
Othow Bol had lived with diabetes since 2008, a condition that had previously resulted in the amputation of one of his legs.
‘A significant loss’
Press Secretary Sabit said the commissioner’s death is “a significant loss” for the people of Makal County, noting that he had begun important work to foster peace and unity among the area’s communities.
“Commissioner Othow faced diabetes with remarkable bravery. Even after losing his leg to the disease, his dedication to his duties never wavered,” she said.
Moses Ezekiel, secretary-general of the Upper Nile State government, also conveyed condolences to the late commissioner’s family and the people of Makal.
“We received the news with great shock. This is a major loss to Makal County and the entire Upper Nile State,” Ezekiel said, describing Othow Bol as a hardworking leader committed to peace and reconciliation.
“We extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends and colleagues during this painful moment,” he added.
Michael Othow Bol was appointed commissioner of Makal County in June by the former Upper Nile State governor, Gen. James Koang Chuol.
