The Uganda Police Force has strongly refuted allegations that security personnel shot a supporter of the National Unity Platform (NUP) during the party’s presidential campaign trail in Sironko District, stating that the individual sustained a head wound during a physical altercation after resisting arrest.
In an official statement released this afternoon, Elgon Region Police Public Relations Officer SP Taitika Rogers explained that the incident occurred in Buchibindi village, Budadiri Town Council, involving Lubulwa Hamza, who was driving a Toyota Wish (registration UBM 430K).
“While driving recklessly, he overtook the candidate’s convoy, refused to stop when flagged down by the security detail, and nearly knocked the security vehicle,” the statement read.
“This prompted a pursuit and interception. On being stopped, he resisted lawful arrest and, in the ensuing scuffle, sustained a wound to the head. He was taken to Hospital.”
Police emphasized that “allegations that he was shot are false and not supported by clinical evidence,” urging the public to remain calm amid the ongoing campaigns.
The incident took place as NUP presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, was en route to a rally in the district.
Earlier reports circulating on social media had claimed that Hamza, described as a prominent private doctor from Mbale and a key NUP organizer, was shot in the head by police, with some accounts alleging he was killed or critically injured.
Videos and photos shared online showed chaotic scenes, including pleas from bystanders and claims of blocked media access to the site, fueling accusations of excessive force against opposition supporters.
The conflicting narratives highlight the heightened tensions surrounding Uganda’s 2026 general elections, where opposition campaigns have frequently clashed with security forces.
Police have called for restraint, while NUP supporters continue to demand accountability.
Hamza remains under medical care, and investigations are ongoing.
