This is the advocacy she is working on for Miss Uganda High School: Angel Tyra is my name, a seventeen year old student at Viva College School and I stand before you all as a proud advocate for Mental Health of youth in Uganda. Did you know that one in seven young people globally, aged 10 to 19 years suffer from depression hence taking their own lives? The same struggle happens to Ugandan youth today, recently, I lost a friend to depression. When she took her life, it was such a shocking moment for all her loved ones and me, it spiraled me down to depression too. But over time I realized that I had to stand up and battle depression, rather thinking of taking my own life. I wish I could use the knowledge that I have to today to remind her that she was never alone. I therefore stand before you all, using my voice to remind young people in Uganda that their feelings matter, their struggles are real and seeking help is a sign of strength, My mission is to inspire hope, break the stigma against mental health of youth, encourage open conversations and ensure no young person ever feels alone during their mental health journey.
