Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, the Deputy Spokesperson of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has asked the presiding magistrate at Kawempe Magistrates Court, Damalie Agumaasiimwe, to recuse herself from handling his case and those of other NUP supporters accused of unlawful drilling.
Mufumbiro made the recusal request during a court appearance alongside the other accused persons for further proceedings.
This followed an earlier session in which the group was denied mandatory bail.
Addressing the court directly, Mufumbiro argued that the magistrate was unable to adjudicate the matter independently.
He alleged that the court was operating under external influence and, as a result, could not deliver justice.
“The magistrate is not able to make what I would call self-decisions. She is acting on orders and cannot serve justice,” Mufumbiro stated in court.
The call for recusal comes amid ongoing complaints from NUP leaders and their lawyers about what they describe as unfair treatment of opposition supporters in politically sensitive cases.
The accused persons maintain that the charges against them are unlawful and politically motivated.
Security was tight at the court premises as the prisoners were brought in, with supporters gathering outside the courtroom to observe the proceedings.
