The Secretary General of the National Unity Platform (NUP), David Lewis Rubongoya, has strongly criticized the arrest of Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, describing it as further evidence of security agencies’ increasing disregard for the rule of law.
In a statement posted on social media, Rubongoya highlighted that Kivumbi’s detention now means three NUP deputy presidents are behind bars.
The other two are Jolly Tukamushaba, Deputy President for Western Uganda, and Lina Zedriga, Deputy President for Northern Uganda.
“With the arrest of Muwanga Kivumbi, this brings to three the number of the National Unity Platform deputy presidents currently in detention. A crazy season,” Rubongoya stated.
Muwanga Kivumbi holds the position of NUP Deputy President for Buganda, serving under party president Robert Kyagulanyi, widely known as Bobi Wine.
Rubongoya pointed out that Tukamushaba and Zedriga have been held for nearly eight days without being presented in court or formally charged—conditions he said breach constitutional standards.
He accused security forces of operating beyond legal boundaries.
“Jolly Tukamushaba and Lina Zedriga are now almost eight days in custody. Never have they been arraigned nor charged. Now Muwanga Kivumbi joins them. Why is police breaking the law?” he asked.
NUP officials have consistently urged authorities to respect constitutional rules mandating that suspects appear before a court within the required timeframe, cautioning that extended detention without trial erodes trust in the judicial system.
These detentions occur against a backdrop of rising political friction in the wake of the recent elections, with opposition figures intensifying calls over issues of political liberties, adherence to due process, and the behavior of security personnel.
