Makerere University Hands Over Land for AFCON 2027 Training Facilities

Makerere University has officially handed over land to the UPDF Engineers Brigade for the construction of modern training facilities, marking the first phase in the development of the institution’s stadium complex.

The handover ceremony was led by the Chairman of the National Council of Sports (NCS), who formally transferred the designated site to the UPDF Engineers Brigade, the appointed contractor for the project.

Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, Makerere University Vice Chancellor, welcomed the milestone and expressed gratitude to the government and the NCS for prioritising sports infrastructure investment.

“I thank the Government and the NCS for this investment in our youth,” Prof. Nawangwe said.

“This development will not only strengthen Makerere’s sports capacity but also contribute significantly to Uganda’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.”

The new training grounds form part of Uganda’s broader infrastructure preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Kenya and Tanzania.

The tournament, scheduled for 2027, will be jointly staged by the three East African countries in a landmark display of regional cooperation and sports development.

University officials highlighted that the facilities will enhance Makerere’s ability to nurture athletic talent while supporting national efforts to ensure world-class readiness for the continental championship.

The project aligns with ongoing government initiatives to upgrade sports venues and training centres across Uganda in anticipation of the tri-nation AFCON hosting.
