The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) held a solemn memorial service at All Saints’ Cathedral, Nakasero, to honour the life and legacy of Major General Francis Takirwa, who passed away on 7 February 2026 at the UPDF National Referral Hospital.
The service brought together high-ranking military leaders, government officials, parliamentarians, clergy, family, and friends to celebrate a career marked by dedication, professionalism, and warmth.
Hon. Huda Oleru Abason, Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs (Veteran Affairs), described Maj Gen Takiriwa as an exceptionally cheerful and loving officer whose personality shone through even under the pressures of military service.
“General Takiriwa was always jolly and loving. Today, we give our last tribute to a man who served his country faithfully. His work on earth is done, and he has gone to the Lord. Though he is physically gone, his memory will remain with us forever,” she said.
Delivering a message on behalf of Chief of Defence Forces Lt Gen James Mugira, the Managing Director of the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) praised the late general as a true embodiment of UPDF core values: patriotism, professionalism, discipline, integrity, and loyalty.
“He was a professional soldier whose career reflected dedication to duty and commitment to excellence. In every responsibility entrusted to him, he led by example, upheld standards and instilled confidence through his conduct and commitment,” the message read.
Lt Gen Mugira highlighted Maj Gen Takiriwa’s decisive command in 1999 during operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he delivered a significant blow to enemy forces.
Over his distinguished career, Maj Gen Takiriwa held several pivotal roles, including Chief of Education, Sports and Culture; Commander of 2 Division; Deputy Commander Land Force; and one of the ten UPDF representatives in the 10th Parliament.
Speaking for the family, his sister Ms Florence Sanyu remembered him as a loving, hardworking, and deeply compassionate man.
“He devoted his life to serving the nation. He was compassionate and looked after many children who greatly loved him,” she said.
The service was presided over by Most Rev. Dr Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, Archbishop of the Church of Uganda.
Among those in attendance were ministers, Members of Parliament, senior generals, service commanders, UPDF officers of all ranks, clergy, friends, and extended family members.
