Housing Finance Bank has reinforced its commitment to sustainable community development by commissioning a new water harvesting and preservation system at Maganjo UMEA Primary School in Kawempe, Uganda.
This project, part of the bank’s broader Water Supply and Sanitation Solution (WASS) program, aligns with its sustainability goals and aims to deliver lasting improvements in access to clean water for vulnerable groups.
The WASS initiative focuses on enhancing clean water availability, sanitation, and hygiene practices across schools, communities, and households. It involves deploying rainwater harvesting setups, storage tanks, boreholes, and treatment technologies, alongside hygiene awareness and education efforts.
By doing so, the program fosters healthier school environments, bolsters community resilience against water shortages, and promotes reliable, long-term water security.
The commissioning took place during the Ramadan season, embodying values of generosity, compassion, and communal support. The installed system features a 10,000-litre storage capacity and will directly benefit over 1,400 pupils and staff at the school. Previously, water scarcity forced the institution to spend more than UGX 15.3 million each year on supplies, straining its resources.
With this intervention, the school now has dependable access to clean water, which is vital for student health, proper hygiene, reduced absenteeism, and uninterrupted learning—especially important at a Muslim-oriented institution where water supports daily rituals like wudhu (ablution) and meal preparation.
Ronald Baguma, Business Distribution Manager at Housing Finance Bank, represented the institution at the event.
He emphasized:“Projects like this one help us advance key Sustainable Development Goals, including good health and well-being, quality education, clean water and sanitation, sustainable communities, and partnerships for progress. We are proud to collaborate with the Muslim community and our partners in these meaningful changes. Together, we’re creating a healthier, more hopeful future for the next generation.”
Hajjat Afua Boogere, Head Teacher of Maganjo UMEA Primary School, shared her appreciation: “This 10,000-litre water harvesting system directly tackles one of our biggest ongoing challenges. For a school like ours, reliable water is essential—not just for drinking and cleaning, but for religious practices and daily operations. The bank’s support significantly reduces our financial pressures and ensures our children can focus on education in a safe, supportive setting.”
Through efforts like the WASS program and targeted interventions such as this, Housing Finance Bank continues to extend its impact beyond financial services.
By forging strategic partnerships, the bank drives tangible, enduring improvements in education, health, and quality of life for Ugandan communities.
